    In heavy industry, structural engineering, and manufacturing, the ability to precisely transform flat metal sheets into cylinders, cones, and other curved shapes is crucial. Plate rolling machines are the powerhouse equipment behind this essential process.

    How Baichuo Plate Rolling Machines Work?


    Plate rolling machines operate on a basic principle: applying force exceeding the yield strength of a metal sheet to cause permanent plastic deformation. This process requires a system of precisely positioned rollers.


    • Yield Strength: The point at which a material begins to deform permanently under stress.

    • Three-roller or Four-roller Configuration: Most modern machines, including those from Baichuo, use either a three-roller or four-roller setup.

    • In a 3 roll plate roller, two lower rollers provide support while an adjustable upper roller presses down on the sheet to start bending.

    • The 4 roll plate rolling machine adds an extra side (clamping) roller. The two central rollers handle the main bending force while the two side rollers control the curvature radius and pre-bending.


    The sheet is fed horizontally between the rollers, which rotate and pull the material through. As the sheet moves, vertical pressure from the central rollers forces the material into a circular curvature.


    Pre-bending in Plate Rolling Machines


    One of the most critical steps to achieving high-quality bending is pre-bending. When flat sheets are rolled, both ends naturally remain straight as they have not yet passed through the maximum pressure zone. This straight part is known as the "flat section."


    To eliminate the flat section and form a complete cylinder, modern plate rolling machine systems must perform pre-bending. The sheet is fed into the plate rolling machine, the upper roller descends to the edge, applying maximum pressure to bend the ends of the sheet before the main rolling process begins.


    Roller Adjustment and Radius Control in Plate Rolling Machines


    The radius of the final part—whether a large industrial storage tank or a small pipe—is controlled by the adjustable rollers. This adjustability is central to the plate rolling machine's versatility.


    • Radius Control: The tighter the desired curve (smaller radius), the lower the upper roller (or side roller) descends relative to the bottom rollers.

    • Variable Geometry: Baichuo's precision machines feature variable geometry, allowing operators to electronically fine-tune the pressure and roller positions via CNC systems. This precise control enables rolling of different radii within the same sheet.


    The sheet metal rolling machine continuously processes the material, repeatedly passing it through the rollers and gradually increasing pressure until the desired curvature is achieved, utilizing strain hardening to fix the shape.
